Women's College Basketball: Raiders suffer home loss

37+ min ago (349+ words) Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story. Hi, I'm the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. I've gone through a lot of changes over the years, but what has never changed is my commitment to community and to local journalism. I've got an entire team of dedicated people who work night and day…...

Ask the Master Naturalist: Northern lights should remain more active for next couple of years

7+ hour, 55+ min ago (392+ words) Question: I've seen more pictures of the northern lights on social media lately. Is something going on or are people just taking more pictures of them? Answer: The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are on the upswing, both in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere, where they are known as the aurora australis. Question: How do I know when there is a geomagnetic storm on the sun, meaning there may be northern lights here soon? Answer: The best way is to use an app on your phone, which will send you notifications if you want. A simple free app that I use is "My Aurora." The app gives you notification of the KP index and the percentage likelihood that you'll see aurora in your specific location. The app also gives you a percentage chance of seeing the northern lights....

Senior Moments: Baby boomers, how good were the ‘good old days?’

23+ hour, 40+ min ago (229+ words) During this Thanksgiving season let's look at some of the things that we're thankful for in this day and age. The "good old days" are often the subject around the dinner table when all the family is gathered, but those days may not be as good as some of us baby boomers like to think they were. Let's look back at some of the things that we enjoy now that have improved over the last 50 years. The average life expectancy in 1950 was approximately 71.02 years in the United States, and in 1960 it was 69.77 years. For the year 2023 the CDC reports that life expectancy for females is 81.1 years and for males it's 75.8 years " averaging out to 78.4 years. That's quite an improvement, wouldn't you say? Modern medicine and modern conveniences have a lot to do with that. In previous columns I've talked about…...

Help! What is this creepy worm?

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (649+ words) Q: Do you know what these worms are? I get tons of them in the corners of my garage, right by the door opener rails. I cleaned them out, and a week later, I found more. I've tried to spray those areas with Raid, but I keep getting them. " Dave B. A: Wow, those look creepy, to say the least. For identification and control, I consulted a co-worker, Patrick Beauzay, an entomologist with North Dakota State University Extension. Patrick says: "These are millipedes. They are completely harmless but can be a nuisance. It seemed to be a good year for them. They live outdoors in areas with ample moisture where they feed on decaying organic matter. "In the fall, they start looking for overwintering places and can move into homes when their preferred habitat dries out. They will disappear once it gets cold…...
