As Trump vows to pardon ex-president, Honduras votes in tense election
16+ min ago (552+ words) Just days before a tense presidential election in Honduras, President Donald Trump threw himself into the center of the race. "It's an abomination," said a former Drug Enforcement Administration agent who worked on the Hern'ndez case and spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about a sensitive case. "Ludicrous to even consider, much less actually go through with." Gustavo Ir'as, the executive director of the Center for Democracy Studies in Honduras, said Trump's action "distorts the fragile Honduran democracy and escalates to a new level the political polarization of the country and the risk of an institutional crisis." Hondurans began voting Sunday morning and are choosing between three candidates in what polls suggest is a close race: Asfura, the former mayor of Honduran capital Tegucigalpa; Rixi Moncada, a former defense minister aligned with the current leftist government; and…...
My husband and I quit our jobs to travel for a year. My biggest concern was having a career gap on my résumé.
32+ min ago (903+ words) This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Maria Laposata, 32, the founder of travel consultancy Travelries. Her words have been edited for length and clarity. Life made me realize I needed a break. My husband and I had moved in together just before the pandemic, and our one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles had become both our offices. We were making it work, but I could feel the walls closing in. We both love to travel, so in an effort to dream a little, I said, "Let's make a list of all the places we want to go." I'm a bit of a spreadsheet nerd, so I took his list and mine, ranked them, and combined them into one massive spreadsheet. It was my little form of stress relief. At the time, I was working on the operations team at…...

A New York Thanksgiving: From hospital rooms to Gracie Mansion
34+ min ago (440+ words) My own Thanksgiving: I was the guest of'Luigi Romaniello, the Waldorf's managing director, in the hotel's new Lex Yard restaurant. Just months old, Lex Yard is beyond terrific. D'cor, service, menu. As I left, there came an unfamiliar phone caller. She quickly spoke about'Victoria Gotti. Her dad, of course, was gangster John Gotti, who died in prison in '02. I knew him. We shared lawyer'Barry Slotnick. I took Anthony Quinn to Gotti's trial. Gotti's playground was nightclubs. My husband worked nightclubs. In New York, Italian restaurateurs would slam a bottle of unrequested red wine on our table with another unrequested "Courtesy of John G." I was the only one Gotti spoke to from prison. In July '03 at a party I gave, I reported Victoria's stilettos were so high she could barely walk in them. In '08 she was unloading her Long Island home…...
